André Miquel

André Miquel (born September 26, 1929 in Mèze ) is a French scholar of Islam and Arab studies.

Miquel studied from 1950 at the École normal supérieure with the Agrégation in 1953. 1953/54 he was a scholarship holder of the Institut français d'Études Arabes in Damascus and 1954/55 he did his military service. 1955/56 he was general secretary of the French cultural and archaeological mission in Ethiopia and from 1956 to 1957 high school professor in Clermont-Ferrand . From 1957 to 1961 he was responsible for Africa and Asia in the department for cultural and technical cooperation in the French Foreign Ministry . In 1961/62 he was cultural attaché in Saudi Arabia, in 1962 he became Maître-Assistant for Arabic Studies at the University of Aix-en-Provence and in 1964 at the sixth section of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). In 1967 he received his doctorate. In 1968 he became Maître de conférences at the University of Paris VIII (Vincenne) and in 1970 at the University of Paris III . From 1976 to 1997 he was professor for classical Arabic language and literature at the Collège de France .

From 1991 to 1997 he was administrateur général des Collège de France and 1984 to 1987 of the Bibliothèque nationale .

He worked on the historical geography of the Arab world, wrote overviews of Islam and translated the Arabian Nights .

After he had prepared a report on the French university libraries in 1989, he became the first President of the newly established Conseil supérieur des bibliothèques.

He is commander of the Legion of Honor, officer of the Palmes académiques and the Ordre national du Mérite and Commander des Arts et Lettres. Since 1991 he has been a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
