Andrea Wanka

Andrea Wanka (born Scheele; born April 4, 1981 ) is a German special education teacher . She is an expert in the field of deafblind / hearing impaired education and took over the first professorship for this subject at the Heidelberg University of Education in the 2018 winter semester . Her research is particularly focused on Usher and CHARGE syndromes .

Career

Andrea Wanka studied from 2001 first at the PH Schwäbisch Gmünd , then at the PH Heidelberg teaching at special schools specializing in education for the blind and deaf and the extension course in special needs early intervention. In 2006 she completed an extension course in special needs early intervention with special needs education for the deaf and the blind. She submitted her dissertation there in 2011 , for which she carried out a long-term study on children with CHARGE syndrome.

Since 2012, she has been working for the St. Franziskus Heiligenbronn Foundation as a representative for deafblindness and hearing impairment . In 2015 she received the Young Professional Leadership Award for the promotion of young scientists at the congress of the Deafblind World Association for her work . From 2009 to 2014, she taught deafblindness at the University of Birmingham , in particular training concepts in Germany.

When the first professorship for deafblind / hearing-impaired education was established in Heidelberg, she was appointed professor to develop it.

Wanka is a member and board member of several associations that deal with deafblindness , including the state working group for deafblind Baden-Württemberg founded in 2011 and the world association Deafblind International since 2012 .
