The Andrew Bobola Church (also Jesuit church ; Pol .: św Kościół Andrzeja Boboli w Szczecinie. ) In Szczecin (Szczecin) district Torney (Turzyn) at the Pocztowa 22 (Gabelsbergerstraße) near the former railway station Torney (Turzyn) was consecrated in 1933 as the Evangelical Nikolai-Johannis-Church.

history

The church province of Pomerania of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union was the builder of the church. The planning of the church was started in 1928 by the architect Adolf Thesmacher . Construction began in 1932 and the church building was completed the following year. The first pastor was Karl Jahnke.

Piotr Zaremba , the first post-war mayor of Szczecin, appointed in April 1945, turned to Archbishop Walenty Dymek for spiritual support for the growing number of Polish settlers. The first Jesuit priests came to town in June. The attempt to keep the Church of St. Peter and Paul (Stettin) failed in negotiations with the communist administration. On October 1, 1945, the former Nikolai-Johannis-Kirche was consecrated under the patronage of Andreas Bobola . At the same time a parish was established. Repair work on the church began during the year.

architecture

The church is designed in the modernist style as a two-story pseudo - basilica , with a high tower and a nave with a gable roof. The entrance area is accentuated with four massive pillars. One can see some subtle references to the Romance style made by the modernist language.

Conversions

In 1964 the church was given a parquet floor and in 1969 new altars. A year later, a mosaic was placed in the chancel and a new main altar and tabernacle were installed. In 1989 the roof was covered with copper sheet. In 1994 new lighting and heating were installed.
