Andrew Rippin

Andrew Lawrence Rippin (born May 16, 1950 in London , † November 29, 2016 in Victoria ) was a Canadian scholar of Islam.

Life

He served as Professor of History and Dean of the Humanities Faculty at the University of Victoria . His academic focus was on the history of the origin of Islam and the interpretation of the Koran in the classical period of Islam. In 2006 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada . Some works relate to the study of Ibadism . Rippin was a student of John Wansbrough and was considered an important representative of the so-called "revisionist" school of Islamic studies , which stands for a historical-critical re-research of the sources of the early Islamic period.
