Andrzej Poczobut ( Belarusian Андрэй Пачобут) (born April 16, 1973 in Vjalikaya Bjerastavitza in the Belarusian SSR ) is a Belarusian journalist, author and political activist who comes from the Polish- speaking minority in Belarus.

Life

Poczobut has worked for various newspapers and magazines in Belarus, such as Dień , Narodnaja Wolja , Głos znad Niemna and Magazyn Polski . In August 2011 he worked for the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza . At that time he was one of the leading members in the Union of Poles in Belarus.

Pozcobut lives in Grodno with his wife, daughter and son .

Arrests and their consequences

In late 2010 and early 2011, Poczobut was arrested by the country's authorities. Among other things , he was accused of participating in an unauthorized protest . He received a fine in the first trial and a 15-day prison term in the second. Poczobut's objections that he had attended the events as a journalist did not help, his apartment was searched, computers and other documents were confiscated.

The President of the European Parliament , Jerzy Buzek , protested against Poczobut's detention . In addition, other institutions such as Amnesty International and the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) turned against the state's arbitrariness. Poczubut's journalist license has been withdrawn. He turned down a proposal from the authorities to work from Warsaw .
