Andrés Montañez (born May 7, 1942 in San Juan , Puerto Rico ), better known as Andy Montañez , is a well-known salsa musician .

Life

Andy Montañez was born in Tras Talleres , part of the Santurce neighborhood in San Juan, as the eldest of 17 siblings.

Montañez became famous as a member of the internationally successful band El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico through songs such as Hojas blancas (White Leaves), Un verano en Nueva York (A Summer in New York), El barbero loco (The Crazy Barber) etc. In den For 15 years in the El Gran Combo , he worked on 37 LPs . Since he left the group, he has also enjoyed international success as a solo artist and toured Latin America and the United States several times . At the 1992 Expo in Seville , Spain , he was a representative of his home country Puerto Rico.

On November 2, 2006, Montañez, together with Pablo Milanés , won his first Latin Grammy for the best traditional Latin American album.

On July 19, 2008, he performed for the first time in Germany, accompanied by the band Mercadonegro, as part of the 6th Hamburg International Salsa Festival.
