Angoche (island)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Angoche is a small continental island in the area of the city of the same name Angoche in Mozambique . The main source of income was the shipping of slaves, which helped the nobility of the Nyapakho clan to wealth. The island was not conquered by the Portuguese until 1913, which can be attributed to the valiant resistance of the sultan, particularly Ibrahim Iussuf. His nephew, the commander of a 30,000-strong army, took power and stubbornly fought off the Portuguese until 1890. From then on, Farlah, the last sultan, resumed the war against the Portuguese until he was captured in battle in 1910 and taken to East Timor, where he died in prison. The small island is hit by cyclones ; Cyclone Huda in particular is still remembered. So permanent settlement was not possible. Angoche is the largest producer of cashew nuts and shrimp in Mozambique. Coordinates: 16 ° 15 '  S , 39 ° 54'  E
