history
Angoche is one of the oldest places in Mozambique. It has been an important Muslim trading center since at least the 15th century and became a sultanate because of its importance in the gold and ivory trade . After the Portuguese established a trading post in Quelimane in 1544, Angoche lost its importance as a regional port to the city to the south. Nevertheless, Angoche kept close contacts with the Ilha de Moçambique . In the 19th century, Angoche became a center of the slave trade and remained so until 1860.
