Attack on Tremseh

The attack on Tremseh was a military operation during the civil war in Syria . Government forces attacked the Syrian village of Tremseh in the late evening of July 12, 2012 , where armed opponents of the regime were suspected. At least 68 people, including civilians, were killed, initial statements by opposition members said that 100 to 220 were dead. Nevertheless, opposition groups assumed that around 150 people were killed because the Syrian army took bodies with them. How many armed rebels were among the dead could not be determined. According to the state news agency SANA , three government soldiers also died.

UN observers visited the affected town a few days later. They then found that the attack had targeted government opponents and deserted soldiers. Artillery and mortars were used. The Syrian government denied the allegations. In their portrayal, extremists attacked the village. The government forces followed them to fight the extremists.

Reactions

The German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle blamed the Syrian government for the civilian victims. He accused the government of Bashar al-Assad of using heavy weapons. The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke of attempted genocide . The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke of a massacre.
