    The Angulate Sandstone Formation is a lithostratigraphic formation of the southern German Jura. It is underlain by the Psilonotenton Formation and overlaid by the Arietenkalk Formation and the Gryphaeensandstein Formation . In Baden-Württemberg it meshes with the Angulatenton formation , in Franconia with the Bamberg formation . It reaches a thickness of up to about 20 m and is dated to the upper hettangium .

    The term Angulate layers was already used by FA Quenstedt 1856–57 and equated with its stratigraphic unit Lias alpha2. The Angulate layers are named after the ammonite Schlotheimia angulata (formerly Ammonites angulatus ) found in them. In the Stratigraphic Table of Germany 2002, the Angulate strata are subdivided into the Angulate Clay Formation and the Angulate Sandstone Formation. A definition of the formation is given by Bloos et al. (2005).

    The Angulate sandstone formation consists of claystones with embedded, platy fine sand and siltstone banks as well as shill limestone banks and a basal limestone bank with ooids. The thickness varies in the area of ​​the Swabian Alb between 9 and 20 m. The lower limit is the lower edge of the so-called "oolite bank", the upper limit is formed by the insertion of the marl, marl limestone and limestone banks of the ariet limestone formation .

    Temporal scope and distribution area

    The sediments of the Angulatensandstein formation were during the Oberhettangium deposited and include the Ammoniten zones of Alsatites liasicus and Schlotheimia angulata . The formation is widespread on the Swabian Alb east of a line Stuttgart - Hechingen . It interlocks to the west with the Angulatenton formation and in Franconia with the Bamberg formation . There is a small gap between the Angulate Sandstone Formation and the underlying Psilonotenton Formation. In the northern Limestone Alps, an occasional condensation horizon of the Tethys forms the age-related equivalent of the Angulate sandstone. The ammonites of the Megastoma zone and the Marmoreum zone are evidence of a much greater biodiversity than the Angulate sandstone.
