Anisa Machluf ( Arabic أنيسة مخلوف, DMG Anīsa Maḫlūf ; also Anisa Makhlouf al-Assad ; * 1930 in Latakia ; † February 6, 2016 in Damascus ) was the wife of the former Syrian President Hafiz al-Assad and from 1971 to 2000 the country's first lady and mother of the current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad .

Career

Machluf was born in the coastal city of Latakia. Her Alawite family was wealthy. She married the future Syrian President Hafiz al-Assad in 1957. The couple had five children, Bushra , Basil (†), Bashar, Majed (†) and Mahir . Although she performed very little in public, she was considered very influential in Syrian society. She is Rami Machluf's aunt . During the civil war in Syria in 2012, she and other members of the Assad family were sanctioned by the Council of the European Union , her assets were frozen and she was banned from traveling. In the last years of her life she was often ill and therefore often consulted doctors in Germany . She died on February 6, 2016 in Damascus.
