Plant simulation

Plant simulation is a common term in control technology. It describes the virtual commissioning of automation systems on system models simulated in real time ( hardware in the loop ). Sheet 1 of VDI 6020 defines the term thermal-energetic system simulation (TEA) for the field of construction as an aid to the hourly calculation of the behavior of a heating or ventilation system based on a building simulation carried out beforehand.

purpose

The automation hardware (e.g. a programmable logic controller ) is often separated on the fieldbus and the input and output modules as well as the dynamic behavior of the process are simulated (see also dynamic system ). The exact dynamic behavior of the process model is not a focus here. During virtual commissioning, it is important to find sign errors in the user software of the automation devices and to test critical process states that cannot be tested in the real system or can only be tested with considerable effort. Finding errors in the logic (e.g. missing or incorrect links) is another focus of the system simulation.

The simulation should reduce the time and money required for commissioning and improve the quality of the user software. It is also possible for the automation company to completely document the pre-tests carried out by archiving the test data .
