The Anna Creek Painted Hills are a 360 square kilometer sandstone hill formation in the Australian state of South Australia .
The hills are in the area of the Anna Creek Station farm . In order to protect the natural formations from destruction, the existence of the hills was long kept secret by the owners of the farm. Today tourist flights are permitted over the area from Coober Pedy Airport , but land access is still blocked.
The mounds were probably formed by soil erosion within the last 50 million years . The dark red color is the result of the oxidation of iron in the rock.
