Anna Melikjan (also: Melikian , Melikyan , armenisch Աննա Մելիկյան , Russian Анна Гагиковна Меликян ; born February 8, 1976 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR ) is an Armenian-Russian film director and film producer . In 2011, Variety magazine ranked her among the ten most promising directors in the world.

Career

Anna Melikjan grew up in Yerevan . She has lived in Moscow since 1994 , where she began studying in 1997 at the Gerasimov Institute for Cinematography in the class of Russian director Sergei Solovyov . During her studies she received an award from the university for her 24-minute short film Poste restante . After graduating in 2002, Melikjan worked for television and made documentaries , among other things . In 2004 she made her feature film debut with Mars . In 2008 she won a prize at the Berlin International Film Festival for her film Alisa, the Meermgirl (original title: Rusalka ). At the Sundance Film Festival she was awarded the prize for best director in the World Cinema / Dramatic category for the same film .
