biography

Anna lost her mother at an early age and, together with her siblings, was brought to Moscow by their grandmother. In 1796 she met Tsar Paul I (1754–1801) at a dance ball and fell in love. Anna was patronized by the courtiers as an aid against the influence of Tsarina Maria Fjodorovna (1759-1828) and Tsar Paul provided her family with honors and offices. Anna was clever enough to treat the tsar's wife, Maria Feodorovna, with respect. It is unclear whether the tsarina felt offended by the existence of a mistress or whether she was realistic enough to accept the fact.

In 1799 she asked his permission to marry Prince Pavel Gagarin, an old friend of the Tsar. After consenting, Gagarin was recalled from the army of Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov , who were fighting in Italy . In 1799 he distinguished himself as a brave soldier under Alexander Suvorov. The wedding took place on January 11, 1800 in Saint Petersburg .

On the night of March 23, 1801, Tsar Paul I was strangled in an assassination attempt by conspirators from aristocratic circles after he had refused to sign his abdication. Anna went to Turin with her husband, where he was appointed ambassador. She died of tuberculosis in Turin on April 25, 1805 and was buried in the Alexander Nevsky Convent .
