The Anna-Seiler-Brunnen in Marktgasse in Bern

Anna Seiler (first mentioned in 1348 in Bern ; † before August 14, 1360 there ) was from Bernburg and is considered the founder of the Inselspital .

Live and act

Mentioned for the first time around 1348, Anna Seiler, the daughter of the Bernese councilor Peter Ab Berg and widow of Heinrich Seiler, Spitalmeister zum Niedern Spital in Bern, is familiar with the needs and needs of the sick in late medieval Bern. A few years after the first plague epidemic in Bern, Seiler confirmed in her will of November 29, 1354 the foundation of a hospital for thirteen needy bedridden people. Innovative for the time was the provision in the will, according to which a patient should be released as soon as he regains his strength that he no longer needs hospital care. Because in the European Middle Ages a “hospital” mostly served as a poor house or accommodation for pilgrims.

The name Insel goes back to a move of the “Seilerinnen-Spital” to the former Dominican convent “St. Michales Island ”. In 1724 a new building was put into operation, which stood on the site of today's east wing of the Federal Palace. After it was moved to Kreuzmatte in 1881–84, one of the hospital buildings was named Anna-Seiler-Haus in the anniversary year of 1954.

The Temperantia fountain in Marktgasse has also been called the Anna Seiler fountain since the 19th century .
