Annalisa Buffa (* 1973 ) is an Italian mathematician who specializes in numerical analysis and partial differential equations (PDE).

Buffa studied computer science with a degree in 1996 and received his doctorate in 2000 from the University of Milan under Franco Brezzi (Some numerical and theoretical problems in computational electromagnetism). She has been at the Istituto di matematica applicata e tecnologie informatiche E. Magenes (IMATI) of the Italian CNR in Pavia since 2001 , of which she is the director.

She was visiting researcher at the Jacques-Louis Lions Laboratory (JLL) at the University of Paris VI, at the Ecole Polytechnique , the ETH Zurich and the University of Texas at Austin (Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, ICES).

She deals with isogeometric analysis , discretization of PDE, linear and nonlinear elasticity theory, contact mechanics, integral equations on non-smooth manifolds, the Maxwell equations on non-smooth manifolds and finite element methods (FEM) for stabilization for FEM, domain decomposition methods, asymptotic Analysis. Her work was widely used in computer simulations in industry, for example in the electromagnetic field.

In 2007 she received the Bartolozzi Prize and in 2015 the Collatz Prize for her spectacular application of deep-seated and advanced mathematical concepts to receive outstanding contributions to the development of computer simulations in science and industry (laudation). She was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul 2014 (Spline differential forms). In 2008 she received an ERC Starting Grant. In 2016 she was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .
