Franco Brezzi
Franco Brezzi (born April 29, 1945 in Vimercate ) is an Italian mathematician , known for his contributions to numerical mathematics . He worked on the fundamentals and applications of the finite element method in structural mechanics , fluid mechanics and electromagnetism .
Life
Brezzi obtained his degree in mathematics at the University of Pavia in 1967. He was later appointed professor there, where he taught until 1997. Since then he has been working in research at the University Institute for Advanced Studies in Pavia . He also heads the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Information Technology (IMATI) of the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche .
Annalisa Buffa is one of his PhD students .

The best-known result from Brezzi's research is the independent derivation of the so-called Ladyschenskaja - Babuška -Brezzi condition ( LBB ), often also called the inf-sup condition, in 1974. The LBB condition formulates a sufficient condition for the stability of a mixed- Finite element problem with saddle point structure , as occurs for example in the discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations or Darcy's law in differential form.
Awards and Editorships
Brezzi is editor of Mathematical Models & Methods in Applied Sciences , Calcolo , Numerical Mathematics .
He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei , the European Academy of Sciences and the Istituto Lombardo and a Fellow of the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM). He is a Highly Cited Researcher at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).
In 2006 he became Commendadore al merito of the Republic of Italy. In 2009 he was John von Neumann Lecturer . For 2012 he was awarded the Blaise Pascal Medal , in 2004 he received the Gauss Newton Medal at the IACM Congress in Beijing and in 2010 the Primo Gili Agostinelli of the Turin Academy of Sciences. He was selected as plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2014 in Seoul (The great beauty of UEM 's).
