The name Annen-Mitte-Nord is an administrative construct. Together with the district of Annen-Mitte-Süd , Annen-Nord, the colloquial name for it, forms the center of the largest district in Witten, which means that both together also form the district of Annen in the public eye. Annen consists entirely of seven, sometimes very different districts, due to the massive settlement of retailers, discounters, service providers and also medium-sized companies in the two districts, as well as the development in the entire vicinity of both districts, Annen-Nord and Annen-Süd are considered one unity. This corresponds to the historical growth of Annen especially in the second half of the 19th century.

The fact that the center of Annen in Annen-Mitte-Nord (or Annen-Nord) and Annen-Mitte-Süd (or better said Annen-Süd) was in two districts probably goes back to the construction of two railway lines. In addition to the day that are still in operation range of the S-Bahn line S5 , led from 1880 to 1982, the popular Rheinischer donkey named compound of Langendreer after Löttringhausen by Annen. The area south of the route was assigned to Annen-Süd, the area north of it to Annen-Nord. Most of Annen-Süd was not developed until after 1950. It is characterized by one and two family houses. Annen-Nord was shaped by mines and their suppliers until the mid-1920s. After the colliery died out, the mining areas in particular were converted into green spaces and residential areas.

In contrast to the term Annen-Süd, which does not officially appear, the term Annen-Nord has a reference point in the form of the S-Bahn stop Witten-Annen-Nord . Since there has been no Annen-Süd station since 1982, the station name Witten-Annen-Nord is the only visible indication of the division of Annen-Mitte into a north and a south part. Apart from the main train station in Witten City , Witten-Annen-Nord is the only S-Bahn stop in Witten. Until the mid-1980s, a real train station belonged to the stop. But it was torn down and in its place there is now a Kaufring department store. Since 2006 it has only been a stopping point from a railway operations perspective .

The planning office of the city of Witten is considering replacing the S5 line with a tram line. This conversion could, on the one hand, improve the profitability of the route through more stops, and on the other hand, simplified regulations apply to the railway systems so that more level crossings and a changed route (e.g. Wengern-Bommern or the Uni-Dortmund loop) are possible. The prerequisite for this is the approval of the federal government and the city of Dortmund. Since the S5 should be shut down several times because of its inefficiency, this project depends u. a. depends on whether the railway needs this section of the route as a reserve.
