Anopheles claviger is a species of the malaria mosquito ( Anopheles ), to which Anopheles villosus , grisescens , turkestani , amaurus , habibi , missiroli and pollutus are used as synonyms.

It occurs in Europe to southern Scandinavia, North Africa and large parts of Asia. Anopheles claviger is widespread throughout Germany and even reaches altitudes over 1000 meters in the Black Forest .

The species is mainly found in forests and swamps and is mainly active at dusk. In Germany , Anopheles claviger prefers cold, deep water with shady marginal vegetation for laying eggs . In warmer countries, the larvae are also found in wells and cisterns . Anopheles claviger overwinters as a larva, the mosquitoes of the new generation appear as early as April. Usually two generations develop each year.

In central and northern Europe this species played no role as a malaria vector , while it was an important vector in southern countries.
