from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Dayton attack , a lone perpetrator shot dead nine people, including his own sister, in Dayton, Ohio on August 4, 2019 at 1:05 a.m. local time. The perpetrator was shot dead by the police present about 30 seconds after the fire started.

Course of action

About two hours before the crime, the perpetrator entered a bar in historic downtown Dayton, Ohio with his sister and a friend . He later separated from the two and opened fire at 01:05 a.m. local time in front of the Ned Peppers Bar (East 5th Street) on bystanders with an AM-15 weapon. He shot his sister and eight other people. Another fourteen passers-by were shot. The police present on site shot the perpetrator about 30 seconds after he opened fire. The attack occurred about thirteen hours after the El Paso attack .

Victim

Of the nine people killed, five were men and four were women. Six victims were black, three victims were white. The victims were between 22 and 57 years old. The 22-year-old sister of the perpetrator is among the victims. The question of whether the perpetrator specifically shot his sister is part of the police investigation. Fourteen other people suffered gunshot wounds, some of them life-threatening.

Perpetrator

According to press reports, the 24-year-old perpetrator Connor Betts felt drawn to violent ideologies. The Tagesspiegel described the perpetrator as an “apparently confused leftist, with sympathy for Satanism ”, an “obvious enthusiasm for excessive violence” and “prototype of a human time bomb”. According to The Washington Times , the perpetrator confessed to being a “Trump-hating, pro-satanic left” and a supporter of Trump-critical presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren ( Democratic Party ). So far, however, there are no concrete indications of a political motive that led the perpetrator to commit the attack. The FBI has launched an investigation into domestic terrorism.

Connor Betts attended Sinclair Community College in Dayton and acted as a singer in a Porngrind band that combines hard rock music with pornographic lyrics. Unlike the El Paso perpetrator, Betts did not leave a manifesto. His farewell message was apparently biographical information on Twitter. "I'm going to hell and I'm not coming back," it said, "I'm going to hell and I'm not coming back."

Former classmates said Betts kept lists of people he intended to kill and rape while in high school . The discovery of the lists led to Betts being suspended from school and sparked a police investigation in 2012. Connor Betts' ex-girlfriend said he showed her a video of the assassination attempt at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on her first date . He also told her that he suffered from bipolar disorder .

According to a coroner, alcohol and cocaine and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax were found in the perpetrator's blood .

Reactions

The US President Donald Trump condemned the acts after the attacks in El Paso and Dayton. At the same time he called for background checks of “mentally unstable” gun buyers and the nationwide reintroduction of the death penalty for such crimes. On August 7, 2019, Trump visited the crime scenes in Dayton and El Paso and spoke to the injured and the families of the victims.
