Attempt attempt in Denmark in 2018
The attempted attack in Denmark in 2018 was an allegedly planned attempt by the Iranian secret service at the end of September 2018 on Iranian opposition members of the ASMLA organization . The Danish intelligence service PET was able to prevent the attack, with parts of the island of Zealand being cordoned off on September 28, 2018. Iran disagreed with the account and denied having planned an attack.
background
Iran seeks the life of opposition and regime critics around the world. In 2017, an Iranian opposition member was liquidated by the Iranian secret service in The Hague .
Intervention by the authorities
On September 28, 2018, bridges and ferry connections on the island of Zealand were closed. On October 30, 2018, the Danish domestic intelligence service PET declared that the police action was to prevent a planned attack on Danish soil by the Iranian secret service. The target of the attack were Iranian opposition members who belong to the ASMLA organization. ASMLA are fighting in part with terror attacks in Iran for a separate Arab state in the oil-rich province of Khusestan.
According to the Danish domestic secret service PET , the background to the suspicion of an attack was that a suspicious man had taken photos of the residence of the leader of an Iranian separatist movement. Hundreds of police officers and soldiers were on duty to block connections to Sweden.
Aftermath
A suspect with a Norwegian passport and Iranian roots was arrested on October 21, 2018 and is on remand. He is said to have enabled the Iranian secret service to operate in Denmark. He is also accused of participating in the failed attack. Three ASMLA members are still under special police protection.
The ambassador of Iran was summoned to the Danish Foreign Ministry and the Danish government dismissed its ambassador from Tehran as a result of the planned attack.
Reactions
Legal action against ASMLA
Danish authorities are examining action against ASMLA members who have endorsed terrorism in connection with an attack that left 25 dead on September 22nd.
Legal action against Iran
The Danish Minister of State Lars Løkke Rasmussen is examining sanctions against Iran.
“Jeg vil ikke udelukke nogen tiltag på forhånd. It shall be said before the European partner, the står over for the collective udfordring - at Iranian rejser to the national and udøver in medium form for handhævelse af lov and order [...] Various other sanctions on the EU kræver enstemmighed. Men for Danmark clearly: We would like to have higher sanctions mod Iran. "
“I don't want to rule out any actions in advance. The matter needs to be discussed with our close European partners who face the same challenge - the Iranians travel to our countries and practice a medieval form of law enforcement. [...] Possible further sanctions against Iran must be discussed in the EU and require unanimity. But for Denmark the attitude is clear: we would like to see further sanctions against Iran. "
EU sanctions
In early 2019, the EU imposed sanctions on two Iranians. The two are said to have been involved in both the presumably planned terrorist attacks in Denmark and another in France. They were entered on the so-called EU terror list. Those affected are the Iranian diplomat Assadollah Asadi and the deputy chief of the Iranian secret service Saeid Hashemi Moghadam . Their assets have been frozen and entry bans have been imposed. The Iranian government criticizes the decision. The Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen praised the decision with the words The EU stands together - such actions are unacceptable and must have consequences .
