Anson Phelps Stokes (born February 22, 1838 in New York City , † June 28, 1913 ) was an American entrepreneur , banker , publicist and philanthropist .

Phelps Stokes was the grandson of Anson Green Phelps . As a boy, he began working in the family-owned company Phelps, Dodge & Company . In 1861 he became a partner and member of Phelps, James & Company in Liverpool, founded by his grandfather and William E. Dodge . In 1879 he organized the Phelps, Stokes & Company bank. In 1880 Phelps was named director of the Nevada Central Railroad .

Phelps became a multimillionaire thanks to his business in the mining industry .
