Antonio de Mesquita Pimentel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

António de Mesquita Pimentel (* in the 17th century ; † in the 18th century ) was a Portuguese colonial administrator.

From July 5, 1685 to 1688, he was Governor of Macau .

In 1695 Pimentel was appointed the first governor of Portuguese Timor and Solor . Before that, the respective captain general had taken on the task of representing the colonial power on site. But Pimentel quickly drew the anger of the locals after his arrival in 1696. He shamelessly plundered them and murdered two children of Capitão-Mor Francisco da Hornay , the leader of the Topasse . The Topasse were mestizos who held real power in the officially Portuguese possessions of the region.

The new Capitão-Mor Domingos da Costa finally put Pimentel in chains in 1697 and had him sent back to Goa.

Pimentel's successor André Coelho Vieira was captured by Costa in Larantuka and sent back to Macau . Only António Coelho Guerreiro was finally able to take up his post as governor on Timor.
