Anta de Adrenunes

The Anta de Adrenunes is an unusual dolmen east of Azoia , a village in the municipality of Colares in the Sintra district in Estremadura in Portugal . Some sources suggest that it is a dolmen that served as a collective grave. Anta is the Portuguese name for around 5000 megalithic systems that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the cardial or imprint culture .

The theory that it was a dolmen was put forward by Joaquim Possidónio Narciso da Silva (1806-1896), who carried out excavations on the site. However, no evidence of chambers or remains were found. Some therefore believe that the structure is a pseudodolmen . In any case, the existence of relining of the foundations of some blocks evidences human intervention. The formation is secluded on a small hill on Cabo da Roca and shows traces of old field systems in its vicinity, so that the place has an archaeological and cultural significance.

The Anta of Adrenunes was classified as a National Monument in 1910 .
