The Antei Group or, alternatively, NPO Antei , which stood for Scientific Production Cooperative Antei , was a Soviet or later a Russian arms manufacturer and electronics company based in Moscow . The company specialized in air defense and radar systems in the military sector . In the civil sector, the company manufactured refrigeration technology, radio-electronic parts and consumer goods. The group was state-owned and subordinated to the Ministry of Radio Technology .
The company had two development centers and several large factories, including the Scientific Research Institute for Electromechanics (NIIEhM), which in 1971 employed 5,000 people. In addition, the joint venture Volzhskprodmash had been founded with the Italian FATA .
After there were plans around 2001 that the competitor NPO Almas should merge with Defense Systems , Almaz had resisted. The company received support from Antei because it feared an overwhelming power in the air defense sector. So it happened that NPO Almaz and Antei merged with each other in 2002 to form Almas-Antei .
