Anthimos I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthimos I ( ancient Greek Άνθιμος Α΄ ) was Patriarch of Constantinople (535-536).

Life

Anthimos was Metropolitan of Trebizond in 532 .

In June 535, with the support of Empress Theodora, he was named Patriarch of Constantinople. In May 536, at the instigation of Pope Agapitus I, a new patriarch, Menas , was appointed. The official reason was a violation of canon law when it was elected. However, the background was too close to the positions of Severus of Antioch ( Monophysitism ). Anthimos was condemned and excommunicated at a council . In August 536 Emperor Justinian issued an edict confirming the decisions of the council.

Anthimos has since lived under the protection of Empress Theodora in the imperial palace, even after her death in 548. The year of his death is unknown.
