Anthoni van Noordt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthoni van Noordt , also Antoni van Noordt and Anthonie van Noordt (* around 1619 - † March 1675 ) was a Dutch organist and composer .

Life

Anthoni van Noordt was the son of Sybrand van Noordt and the brother of Jacobus and Jan , with Anthoni being by far the most famous member of this musical family. Since his stylistic resemblance to Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck , he is assigned to the school of this Amsterdam organist and composer. Van Noordt became organist in the Nieuwe-Zijdskapel in Amsterdam in 1638 and remained so until 1664. Until 1673 he was organist of the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.

He became famous for his tablature book van psalmen en fantasyen , which was published in Amsterdam in 1659. It contains ten psalms and six fantasies in the style of Sweelinck. This work shows his maturity in composing technique and makes it clear that forty years after Sweelinck's death, Sweelinck's school is still alive not only in Northern Germany but also in the Netherlands.

The family also included Sybrandus van Noordt (1659–1705), of whom only a few compositions have survived.
