biography

Barber had been a member of the House of Commons since 1951, with a brief hiatus . After he had already been Minister of Health in 1963/64, he was appointed to the cabinet by Prime Minister Edward Heath as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in June 1970 . Between 1967 and 1970 he was also Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Conservatives.

When the Heath cabinet suffered an early setback on July 20, 1970 due to the death of Chancellor Iain Macleod , Barber succeeded him as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Lord High Treasurer .

In financial policy , he initiated a significant shift from direct to indirect taxation with Heath. Galloping inflation (after the currency switched to the decimal system in 1971) dragged the Heath administration into a confrontation with one of the most powerful unions. Barber retained the office of the Chancellor of the Exchequer by the end of Heath office on March 4, 1974 after the defeat in the elections to the lower house in February 1974th

In 1975 he was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Barber , of Wentbridge in the County of West Yorkshire .
