Anthony Applemore Mornington Bryer OBE FSA FRHistS (born October 31, 1937 in Southsea - † October 22, 2016 ) was a British Byzantine .

Life

He attended Canford School and, after completing his military service, studied history at Balliol College , Oxford from 1958 to 1961 . He initially stayed at Balliol College to write his dissertation on the Trebizond Empire , which he completed in 1967. In 1964 he moved to the University of Birmingham , where he created a program for Byzantine studies. In 1975 he founded the journal Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies . From 1976 he was the founding director of the Center for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies and in 1980 he was appointed professor of Byzantine Studies , a position he held until his retirement in 1999.

He received the Order of the British Empire at the 2009 New Year Honors.
