Anthony Ray (actor)

Anthony Ray (born November 24, 1937 , † June 29, 2018 in Saco , Maine ) was an American actor, film producer and assistant director.

Life

Anthony Ray was a son of the director and actor Nicholas Ray . From 1960 to 1974 he was married to the actress Gloria Grahame (1923–1981). Since she had previously been married to his father from 1948 to 1952 and was thus his stepmother, the marriage caused a scandal. Her marriage to Grahame, who divorced in 1974, has two children.

Ray was initially active as an actor in film and television in 1957. From 1966 he also worked as an assistant director and worked for Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) for the first time with the director Paul Mazursky . Other films together followed; Starting with Alex in Wonderland in 1970, Ray has also been an associate producer on a number of Mazursky's films. At the end of the decade he rose to become a sole producer. As such, he was involved in the films A Hair in the Soup , A Unmarried Woman and Willie & Phil .

For An Unmarried Woman , he and Mazursky were nominated for an Oscar in the category of best film in 1979 . For his role in Shadows , he was nominated for the British Film Academy Award for Best Young Actor. He last appeared in the 1980s as a production manager for films.

Anthony Ray spent his retirement in Maine , where he died in the summer of 2018 after a long illness at the age of 80. He was survived by his wife Sue and his two children from his first marriage.
