Antiochus of Sheba
Antiochus of Saba ( Middle Greek Αντίοχος Σαβαΐτης ; * late 6th century) was an Orthodox abbot and author. He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox churches . His feast day is December 24th .
Life
Little information is known about his life. Antiochus came from the vicinity of Ankyra . He became a hermit and later abbot ( hegumen ) of the monastery of Mar Saba . Antiochus saw the conquest of Jerusalem in 614 by the Sassanids .
Works
A pandect and a prayer have been preserved from Antiochus .
- The Pandekt is a collection of sentences from the Bible and early Christian authors on ethical issues in 130 chapters.
- The exomologesis is a prayer. It was created after the conquest of Jerusalem in 614 by the Sassanids and laments the destruction and losses. It is part of the Orthodox liturgy.
