Antipas of Pergamon

Antipas of Pergamon († around 92 in Ephesus ) was an early Christian mentioned in the Revelation of John .

In the Revelation of John (2.13 ELB ) Antipas is called a "faithful witness". There it is also mentioned that Antipas died as a martyr in Pergamon , "where Satan lives" . Legend has it that Antipas suffered martyrdom under Emperor Domitian after he was thrown into a red-hot brazen ox that was used by the local population to drive away demons.

Antipas is venerated as a saint . His feast day is April 11th . He is invoked by believers to heal toothache. The basilica in the Red Hall in Pergamon or one of the two associated round buildings may have been dedicated to him.
