Antiseen is a punk band from Charlotte, USA .

history

Antiseen was founded in 1983 by singer Jeff Clayton and guitarist Joe Young. The band name sounds like "anti scene" and should express an anti-attitude towards the punk scene. After a while, the band also distanced themselves visually and with their long hair, beards, jeans, T-shirts, leather jackets and sneakers, oriented themselves more towards metal and alternative . In 1988 bassist Thomas O'Keefe joined the band, who had previously unsuccessfully applied in 1984. The band has been touring the world several times since 1992, but has limited their appearances outside of the United States to festivals since the late 1990s. In 2006, the record company TKO released a tribute album called Everybody Loves Antiseen , on which 58 bands and artists (including Jeff Dahl , Zeke , Hank Williams III and Chaos UK ) play or interpret Antiseen songs. In the same year the band was represented with a title on the soundtrack of the gonzo film Fuck the System by director Rob Rotten . In 2013, former drummer Barry Hannibal returned to the band as bassist. Founding member Joe Young passed away in April 2014 at the age of 54.

style

Musically, Antiseen are based on US protopunk bands like the Ramones or the Stooges . The songs are short, quick and simple, guitar solos are largely avoided. Clayton's rough voice shows similarities to Motörhead's music . A special feature is the occasional use of a washboard . The band itself describes their music as "Destructo Rock". The band's lyrics are satirical and at times aggressive. In terms of content, military scenarios, local patriotism and wrestling are often dealt with and numerous violations of "political correctness" are committed. Critics characterize the band as at least partially racist, homophobic and misogynous. The band itself refers to its satirical orientation and describes itself as apolitical. At the beginning of their career, the band accompanied their concerts with unusual optical effects, so mannequins, fake blood and pyrotechnics were regularly used. Due to logistical and legal problems, the band has turned away from this practice. In the meantime, the stage show is supplemented by smaller pyro inserts, instrument destruction and self-harm by the singer using broken glass and microphone stands.
