The Meatmen (German: Die Metzger) are a punk and hardcore band from Lansing in the USA that existed from 1981 to 1997 and reformed in 2008. The only constant member is Robert "Tesco Vee" Vermeulen, the rest of the cast changed frequently.

history

Meatmen was founded in 1981 in Lansing, the capital of the US state Michigan , 50 km west of Detroit . The first line-up consisted of Robert "Tesco Vee" Vermeulen (vocals), the brothers Rich and Greg Ramsey (guitar / bass) and "Mr. X" (drums). Singer Vermeulen was well connected in the punk and hardcore scene, as he had been running a nationwide fanzine , Touch and Go, which had been established in 1979 and founded a record label of the same name in 1980 together with Corey Rusk from the hardcore band Necros . In 1982 the band released two EPs on Touch and Go, with the line-up already changing for the second record: Mike eighth castle of The Fix replaced Greg Ramsey on bass, and Todd Swalla of the Necros played under the pseudonym Berl for "Mr. X" Johnson drums. The first album from 1983 consisted of the first EP and live recordings from the New York Mudd Club .

In the same year, Vermeulen handed over the management of the previously joint label to Rusk and moved with his family to Washington . In 1984 he reanimated Meatmen with a largely new line-up: Todd Swalla, who still lived in Maumee , 750 km away , temporarily used the drums again, guitar and bass were taken over by Lyle Preslar and Brian Baker from Minor Threat . The line-up changed frequently; Brian Baker switched from bass to lead guitar on the 1985 album War of the Superbikes , Eric Zelsdorf played drums and Graham McCulloch (ex- Negative Approach ) bass. 1986 Baker was replaced by James Cooper. On the 1988 live album We're The Meatmen ... And You Still Suck !!! Stuart Casson played lead guitar and Mark Kermanj played drums. With a completely new line-up, Vermeulen released three albums and several EPs with the Meatmen between 1994 and 1996, with the drummer only being replaced again in 1996. In 1997, Vermeulen disbanded the band; In 1999 he moved back to Lansing with his family.

In 2000, We're Not The Meatmen ... But We Still Suck! , a tribute album on which 18 mostly unknown bands covered Meatmen titles.

In 2008, Vermeulen reformed the band with a new line-up after John Brannon (Negative Approach) asked to appear as the opening act for his band. The Meatmen then completed a US tour and released a new album in 2009. In 2010, Vermeulen replaced all members again and recruited three members of the Detroit stoner rock band Chapstik, of whom only the guitarist was replaced in 2012. The last studio album to date, Savage Sagas , was released in 2014.

Baker founded Dag Nasty in 1985 and has been with Bad Religion since 1994 . Cooper played with the Battalion of Saints after his time with the Meatmen . Preslar gave up being a musician and became managing director of Caroline Records . He later worked for Elektra and Sire and graduated with a law degree in 2007.

style

Keith Marlowe summed up for Vice magazine that the fame of the Meatmen is based less on their music than on their performance and their lyrics - the band's trademarks are "exaggeratedly disgusting" song texts, scandalous stage costumes, stage shows full of tasteless show interludes, as well as targeted spoofing of the audience. In his review of the album We're The Meatmen ... And You Suck! for Allmusic the band's music as alternating between "hyper-fast Thrash and long-running attitude" and assessed that Vermeulen's vocals were merely "gurgling (...) hoots". He compared the album with the Misfits album Evilive , but only gave the Meatmen "a tenth of the talent" of the Misfits. The German Ox-Fanzine described the band as a "reasonably funny rock troupe" with provocative humor, whose album We're The Meatmen ... was a hardcore classic, but judged that the humor had worn off over the years and that the late work the first phase, Pope On A Rope , was just "clean produced rock".
