Antoine Vater actually Anton Vater (* 1689 in Hanover , † 1759 in Paris ) was a French harpsichord maker of German origin.

Life

Father was born into a family of harpsichord makers. His father was Martin's father. His older brother Christian Vater took over his father's workshop in Hanover and Anton emigrated to Paris in 1715 to work as a harpsichord maker. He quickly acquired the reputation of being one of the best harpsichord builders in town and was appointed overseer of the royal harpsichords to look after the great collection of Versailles. He trained many apprentices. Many, like him, were German immigrants. Henri Hemsch was one of his apprentices .

Father was a friend of the composer Georg Philipp Telemann , who lived with his father in his Parisian house in 1738.

Preserved instruments

Three instruments from Antoine Vater have been preserved. One from 1732 is in the Cité de la musique in Paris, another from 1737 is in a private collection in England and a third from 1738 in Ireland .
