Anton Rettenbacher
Anton Rettenbacher ( February 18, 1922 in Sautens - May 3, 1945 there ) was an Austrian resistance fighter against National Socialism who was murdered in the last days of the Nazi regime.
Life
Rettenbacher had at least three brothers. He worked as a truck driver in his brother Hans' company and joined the Ötztal resistance movement against National Socialism, together with the brothers Hermann and Georg. Anton Rettenbacher had "followed all instructions given to partisans. For example, he is said to have destroyed lines and even stole a car from the SS, just to offer internal resistance to Nazi rule. He was also deserted for a long time and hid in the woods in the Ötztal. ”Who betrayed the three brothers is not clear. They fled on October 24, 1944, hid near the Piburger See and returned to their home community on May 2, 1945, together with two deserters, after hearing of the surrender of the German armed forces in Italy. They went straight to the home of the mayor and the local group leader of the NSDAP, Martin Parth, in order to take the keys of the parish chancellery from them and to “give them a proper opinion”. When they discussed with the wife of the local group leader, shots suddenly rang out from the first floor and hit Anton Rettenbacher fatally. In the following firefight, his killer, Emil Parth, was seriously injured. He died after a few weeks.
Commemoration
