Antoni Malczewski
Antoni Malczewski (born June 3, 1793 in Warsaw ; † May 2, 1826 there ) was a Polish poet.
Malczewski, who came from a wealthy family, attended high school in Krzemieniec . He entered the army of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1811 , where he rose to the rank of lieutenant. Then he traveled through Western Europe. In 1818 he succeeded in the first ascent of the north summit of the Aiguille du Midi in the Mont Blanc massif . In the following year he allegedly met Lord Byron , whom he admired .
After his return to Poland he wrote his only known work in 1825, the poem Maria , which is now counted among the masterpieces of Polish Romanticism, but which received little attention during his lifetime. In addition to Seweryn Goszczyński and Józef Bohdan Zaleski , Malczewski is part of the Ukrainian School of Poets.
