Antonio Amati

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antonio Amati , and Antonius Amati (* circa 1536 / 1540 in Cremona , † 4. March 1607 ) was an Italian violin maker .

Life

Son of the progenitor of the Cremonic violin making Andrea Amati . Elder brother of the Girolamo Amati . The two are known in the specialist literature as the "Amati Brothers" because the instruments from their joint workshop were provided with printed notes on which both were recorded with their Latinized first names: "Antonius & Hieronymus Fr. Amati // Cremonen Andreae fil. F. 16 .. "The exact date of birth is unknown. However, Antonio Amati is referred to as "Maestro Antoni che fai li liuti - Master Antonio who makes the lute" in a document in his home parish of San Faustino in Cremona from 1556, in which the men fit for arms are listed. The brothers worked in the father's workshop and continued to run it together until the end of 1588 after his father's death in 1577. From December 20, 1588, a document has come down to us, according to which Antonio sold his share of the father's house to Girolamo and they divided up the tools precisely. Nothing is known about the reason for the separation. At least Girolamo used their common labels until 1630. Antonio seems to have stayed in the neighborhood, because the date of his death was recorded by the parish priest of San Faustino and he was buried in the church of San Domenico.

Instruments

The instruments with the common label of Antonio and Girolamo can hardly be assigned to the individual brothers, even for experts. They worked extremely well with their craftsmanship and experimented with the construction of the violin, especially with the outlines, bulges and F-holes. It is characterized by a deep groove, which is responsible for the warm tone of its exhibits.
