Antonio Covarrubias y Leyva (* 1514 in Toledo ; † December 1602 there ) was a Spanish lawyer and humanist.

Life

Covarrubias came from a Toledan family of scholars. His father was Alonso de Covarrubias (1488–1570), the architect of the Toledo Cathedral , his mother came from Belgium. His brother Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva taught canon law at the University of Salamanca; he is now far better known than Antonio for his scientific works.

Antonio also studied at the University of Salamanca and taught canon law at the Cathedral School of Toledo. He participated at his brother's side in the last phase of the Council of Trent and later became a member of the Council of Castile .

Antonio Covarrubias y Leyva was a close friend of the painter El Greco , who portrayed him several times and possibly also depicted him in the painting The Burial of the Count of Orgaz .
