Antonio Gualtieri (* around 1580, exact dates of birth unknown, † December 1649 or January 1650 in Venice ) was an Italian composer of the Baroque era.

Life

Antonio Gualtieri's date and place of birth are unknown. He probably received his musical training in Padua as a student of Giovanni Battista Mosto (1550–1596) and Costanzo Porta (1528–1601), who were maestri di capella at Padua Cathedral between 1580 and 1598 . Before 1604 he was in Rovigo as a musician in the service of Gasparo Campo (1557-1629), the founder of the Accademia dei concordi in Rovigo. In 1604 his Motecta octonis vocibus liber primus appeared in print, which he dedicated to the Bishop of Padua, Marco Corner , in the hope of a job at the cathedral. From 1608 he held the office of maestro di cappella at the collegiate church and the Santuario delle Sette Chiese in Monselice . In the same year his Amorosi diletti , a collection of secular canzons for three voices, came out, which he dedicated to his patron Gasparo Campo.

In 1637 he was appointed maestro di coro to the seminary of San Antonin di Castello in Venice, where the young singers were trained for St. Mark's Basilica . During this time he also taught singing as maestro di coro until 1649 to the students of the Ospedale della Pietà .
