Costanzo Porta

Costanzo Porta (* 1528/29 in Cremona ; † May 19, 1601 in Padua ) was an Italian conductor and composer of the Renaissance .

Life

Porta was a Franciscan and belonged to the convent in Casalmaggiore . Around 1549 he moved to Venice , where he was a student of the composer Adrian Willaert . He was also well known to Gioseffo Zarlino and Claudio Merulo . In 1565 he took over the position of Kapellmeister at the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua and in the following years held this position at various churches in Loreto , Ravenna and Bologna , but finally returned to his original place of activity in Padua and worked there up to his demise.

Lodovico Grossi da Viadana and Giulio Cesare Gabussi were among his numerous students .

Porta was considered an important and influential composer in his day, some put him on a par with Palestrina or Orlando di Lasso . He created mostly sacred works and was a very productive composer. He composed a number of motets , masses and four books with madrigals . In terms of style, he was initially completely under the influence of Willaert, but later freed himself from his strict forms and developed a preference for magnificent and beautiful compositions.
