Antonio Maria Colini

Antonio Maria Colini (born September 12, 1900 in Rome ; died 1989 ibid.) Was an Italian classical archaeologist .

Colini was the son of the archaeologist and director of the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia , Giuseppe Angelo Colini . He studied Lettere at the University of "La Sapienza" in Rome, where he obtained the Laurea in 1920 specializing in archeology. As a student of the influential archaeologist Giulio Quirino Giglioli , he was like this supporter of Italian fascism . Colini entered the Archaeological Service of the City of Rome in 1926 and finally achieved the position of Director of Museums, Galleries, Monuments and Excavations, which he held until 1964 and then retained as Honorary Director.

While his sponsor Giglioli was relieved of his public office after World War II , Colini became the founding director of the Museo della Civiltà Romana in 1955 , which was inaugurated that year on the Palilians , the city's mythical birthday. Planning and implementation of the museum went back to the Museo dell'Impero Romano , inaugurated by Benito Mussolini , didactically implement the exhibition concepts developed for the Mostra Augustea della Romanità , on which Colini had already worked in the 1930s.

Colini, who was also licensed to teach Roman topography from the University of La Sapienza, has covered a wide range of archaeological research on the topography of Rome. He was interested in both individual monuments, such as the temple of Apollo Sosianus or the column of Marc Aurel , as well as entire areas such as Caelius or the Area sacra di Sant'Omobono . Together with Gianfilippo Carettoni , Guglielmo Gatti and Lucos Cozza , he published the new edition of Forma Urbis Romae , the famous marble city map from the time of Septimius Severus , in 1960 . In 1983 he was accepted into the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei for his services .
