The Antonius Cross in Schrebitz 2003

The small monument Antoniuskreuz is a half-meter-high stone cross made of quartz porphyry in Schrebitz, Saxony . The apparently smooth surface does not rule out the earlier presence of a head. It is located on the K 7506 district road in the center of Schrebitz.

timeline

A master blacksmith and his journeymen are said to be buried under this stone, who were murdered by the Swedes during an attack during the Thirty Years' War . The citizens of Mügeln had driven the Swedes to Kiebitz and then hid in Schrebitz. The blacksmith and his journeymen hid in an oven. But the Swedes had found out. The two journeymen crawled out of the oven voluntarily, but the master blacksmith was first stabbed and then pulled out.

interpretation

The medieval custom of setting the stone cross, which was widespread in Saxony , was intended to work for the salvation of souls for those who were surprisingly divorced from life unprepared according to religious beliefs. Passers-by should be induced to pray for the salvation of the dead. The aim here was to make up for what the dead man could no longer do due to his unexpected passing through confession , communion and final unction . Today's common interpretation of stone crosses as a soul tool is always to be seen in the context of religious ideas of people in the Middle Ages. The use of the Antonius Cross and the association with the salvation of the dead indicate an assimilation of pre-Christian ideas. The name originated as a common name due to the external shape as an Antonius cross .
