Antrim Island is a tussock- covered island in the archipelago of South Georgia in the South Atlantic . It is located directly in front of Cape Vakop , the southeastern boundary of the entrance to Hound Bay .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the HMS Antrim , a destroyer of the Royal Navy that was used in the Falklands War in April 1982 to retake South Georgia after the invasion by the armed forces of Argentina .
