Antsiva

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antsiva ( Malagasy ), also angaroa and bakora, is a snail horn that is used in Madagascar as a musical and signaling instrument. The wind instrument belongs to the natural trumpets and is z. B. made from Etritonium gigas , a sea snail , into which a vent hole is drilled on the side.

Like most African trumpet instruments , the antsiva was used as a signaling instrument in ceremonies of the ruler and in a sovereign function. From the first half of the 19th century, signal horns took over the task of going to war with the soldiers. The antsiva has since been mostly blown into the ritual music. This tradition was adopted from mainland Africa.

Corresponding musical and signal instruments are also used in Oceania . An audio sample can be found on Lisa Gerrard's soundtrack to the film Whale Rider ( 2002 ).
