Recruitment Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Yugoslavia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Yugoslavia was signed on October 12, 1968 ( Kiesinger cabinet ) and led to the start of Yugoslav immigration to the Federal Republic of Germany. The recruited workers were called " guest workers " in Germany .

According to the recruitment agreement, Yugoslav citizens were granted permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany in order to earn an income. The recruitment agreements with the FRG were concluded at the initiative of the sending countries to compensate for their current account deficit with the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Federal Republic of Germany concluded similar recruitment agreements with other states since 1955. After the agreement with Yugoslavia, no more were signed. In 1973, the Brandt I cabinet stopped recruiting due to the oil crisis .
