Recruitment Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Spain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of Spain was signed on March 29, 1960 ( Adenauer III cabinet ) and led to the start of Spanish immigration to the Federal Republic of Germany . The recruited workers were called " guest workers " in Germany . Until the recruitment stop in 1973, around 600,000 Spanish guest workers came to Germany.

According to the recruitment agreement, Spanish citizens were granted a permanent residence in the Federal Republic of Germany in order to earn an income. The recruitment agreements with the Federal Republic of Germany were concluded at the initiative of the sending countries to compensate for their current account deficit with the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Federal Republic of Germany concluded similar recruitment agreements with other countries, including Portugal, which led to a growth in the Ibero-German community.
