Attendance society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the social sciences, a society in which communication and legally valid action is essentially based on the physical presence of those involved is referred to as a society of presence (English mostly: face to face society ) . The development of the media is not the only determining criterion: a society with highly developed media technology can still be a presence society due to cultural factors.

Concept history

In the course of the cultural turn in the first decade of the 21st century, the term gained increasing popularity in the areas of social history , cultural history and legal history . The early modern historian Rudolf Schlögl , who teaches in Konstanz , has made significant contributions to the topic . In addition to the social sciences of the early modern period, the concept of the presence society is also used in medieval studies .

Possible characteristics

  • The contractual partners must appear on site for all types of contracts.
  • The legislative process takes place through council or people's assemblies and not by letter.
  • For certain public events (e.g. church services ) the physical presence of the local population is expected.
  • Army leaders are at the head of the army and do not operate from the background.

reception

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , cultural practices and framework conditions that correspond to the model were temporarily or permanently weakened in many countries . For example, the German Bundestag has provisionally approved the quorum for online participation of individual MPs and is examining the continuation of “hybrid” meetings. The same applies to corporations of all kinds. According to Karl-Rudolf Korte , Germany is still an "attendance society".
