Elaine Hammerstein (born June 16, 1897 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † August 13, 1948 in Tijuana , Mexico ) was an American actress who had some success in silent films in the early 1920s .

Life

Elaine Hammerstein was the daughter of Opernimpressarios Arthur Hammerstein from his first marriage to Jean Alli Sion and granddaughter of Oscar Hammerstein I . After the parents' divorce, the father retained custody. In 1913 she made her debut as an actress on Broadway in the musical revue High Jinks . In addition to a few other appearances on stage, Hammerstein has made a total of 44 films since 1915. She was under contract with Selznick Pictures since 1919 , that of Lewis J. Selznick, the father of David and Myron . Her more successful productions in 1922 included One Week of Love alongside Conway Tearle . Shortly thereafter, Hammerstein's career began to wane and she made her last film in 1926. The actress was married several times, including from 1925 to 1930 to Alan Crosland .

She died in a car accident in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1948 when an oncoming car pulled her vehicle off the lane and Hammerstein and the other five occupants were killed. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles .
